Target Audience

My target audience for my magazine is going to be mainly aimed at males with the sub-audience of females. The age bracket of my target audience is going to be in the range of 16-24 year olds.

They will interested in things such as:
  • Concerts, gigs, festivals.
  • Interested in new bands.
  • Are interested in doing music as a career.
  • Can play an instrument or can sing, therefore are in a band.
  • Someone that is regulary buying stuff from the internet.
  • So someone with internet access
  • Someone that likes to keep updated with bands and new technologies.
I want my target audience to be dedicated to music and have a passion for the music they listen to and maybe even play and write. I think it is important for my target audience to be like this because the magazine has had a lot of effort put into it and it should be read by someone that really appreicates the articles that have been produced.
Their personality should be quite mainstream. They have a taste for highstreet brand clothing such as clothing from riverisland, all saints etc...

LIIAR of 3 Music Magazines

Language- Firstly the font would be Sans Serif, all of the text on the front cover is the same. Apart from the name of artist that is being displayed in the photograph 'Pete Doherty', his name 'Pete' on the cover is in a different font, a font that is more creative and dividual. The publisher has done this because it represents Pete as a person, as he is very individual and very much his own person. It also gives the impression that Pete has wrote and signed his name himself, to show that he is very involved with the magazine and dedicated to his music. The photo is a medium close-up and is of a musican called Pete Doherty, the impression he is giving across in the photo is very carefree and almost quite fearless. He gives that impression because he is looking directly into the camera, like he is looking straight at the you (the audience) and doesn't care. Also because he isnt wearing any clothing, giving the impression that he is confident with his body etc. Tattoo above his nipple, showing he is youthful and rebelious. The splash on the cover is an competition advertisment, by including this the publisher is drawing new readers in, it gives them a reason to buy the magazine. The colours used on the cover are mainly pink and white, the pink could represents punk Britain, this also reflects on Pete's personality and lifestyle.
Idealogy- The NME promotes "indie" music, and more than likely white male solo artists or male guitar artists. NME likes to be really up to date with new music trends/bands/charts etc, to be one step ahead of other magazines, and to also be known as very successful. They consider themselves to be extremely serious about music. The NME are not scared of fetauring artist's such as Pete Doherty on their front cover, even though he does have a reputation, that maybe isn't the best of reputations because of what he has done in the past, they believe taking risks like this will help go in their favour of becoming more successful in the industry.
Institution- NME is produced by the media company IPC Media. known as International Publishing  Corporation. IPC Media produced over 60 iconic media brands, so they are very big when it comes to printing. They have done newspapers, magazines, trade and technical, books and all non-newspaper prints. They're a British publisher and are located within the United Kingdom in London. IPC are the publishers of many other big magazines such as NME, Nuts, Look, Pick Me Up, NOW and Marie Claire.
Audience- The NME magazine targets readers that are entertainment enthusiasts... People that feel music is a massive part of their lives, maybe people that are wanting to study and get a music qualification. Readers that are wanting to keep up with lastest bands and news about music. The magazine is aimed at 17-30 year olds, some full-time, part-time and full-time students. They are targetting an audience that are partically interested in things such as festivals, gigs, concerts. Most readers will have already been to at least one of these kind of events. The magazine front cover attracts people like this by having well known artists as the main photograph of that type of genre, as that would immediately attract someones attention that is already interested in that type of music. It also includes splashes and subtitles of other well known artists of that type of music, with intriguing stories about them to read about. This makes the audience want to read the magazin, therefore they will buy it. Having a young male that the audience may find attractive will also encourage a reader to buy the magazine.
Representation- Pete Doherty represents youth, a rebelious male that doesn't really care what others think about him. He represents this by not wearing any clothes, having his tattoos on show, wearing a necklace of his choice. This represents that he is an independent artist. The scruffy hair look that he has going on, also shows that he's individual and will choose to look however he wants and doesn't care about others opinions. He is representing celebrities to be like fearless and careless about their actions, to make the audience inspire to be like them.

Language- The font on this KERRANG magazine is Sans Serif, it is nice, bold and clear for the audience to read. Practically all the font on the front cover is the same. The font throughout the cover seems to be written on an angle, this could show that everythings very on edge and unstable. I think this because the close up shot of 'My Chemical Romance' gives off the same kind of vibe. As his facial expression in the photograph shows him with his hand over his mouth and his eyes wide open looking straight into the camera with one eyebrow slightly raised... All these things gives off the impression that he's looking at something and is shocked and slightly scared by what he's looking at. This could also represent the type of genre of music the magazine is about. With the edgey look that the photo gives off, this also reflects back to the font, as the font also gives off this impression. The artist in the photograph is the lead singer in the band 'My Chemical Romance', it is a close up shot of him. I believe that they have chosen to do this type of shot because the focus really is on his facial expression, as its telling the audience a lot. Rather than clothing and his image below his head. The colouring of text has being chosen to match the colour of the artists hair. The colour of his hair is red, this could represent a number of things such as; a rebelious punk rock artist, love and passion for the music genre and industry. Red is related to rock music and artists, therefore including red on the front cover is clever because it then will instantly attract the right type of audience.
They have included a splash that is an competition advertisment, this is a good idea to attract the audiences attention, and give them a reason to buy the magazine. The edge of the splash has been designed with a spikey edge, you could also say this represents the rock style etc. The magazine cover includes quite a few subtitles.. showing that the magazine has a lot to read inside, gets the audience intrigued. The headlines are quite hard hitting storys, including titles such as 'EXCLUSIVE'. this will immediately draw the eyes of the audience and make them want to buy the magazine. There is also other images of famous rock artists that fans would recognize and make them interested.
Idealogy- KERRANG promote rock music in their magazine. Kerrang are not scared of including a range of different things in their magazine, not only music related things, but things such as; films, games, mobile technology etc. Some of the magazines have 'splashes' on the front covers advertising a competition to win things such as XBOX 360's etc. They have done this to be more successful in selling their product and believes it does so. Most of Kerrang's front covers of their magazines are quite similar in what type of person they have displayed on the front, normally someone that is edgey and interesting to look at, either have dark make-up or crazy coloured hair, just something that makes them stand out. The artist is always placed quite close to camera aswell, as if that person is looking straight at you and is coming towards you (the audience).
Institution- Kerrang! Magazine is produced by Bauer Media, which is based in Hamburg. It is distributed all over the world, but mainly United Kingdom, USA, Australia. Bauer media are well known world wide for there excellent distribution of their magazines and have a world wide circulation of magazines titles amount to 38 million magazines a week.
Audience- The median target age for kerrang readers is 22. They aim the magazine at this type of age group because having a younger profile is a big advantage as traditionally this age group is elusive and expensive to reach. It not only aims at people that are interested in music releases but also is great for readers that are interested in films and games and also mobile technology and government messages. They aim to target readers that attent rock concerts and gigs. People that live, breathe and sleep music, someone that is committed to music, someone that engages with music 24/7. If not listening to music or watching music TV, then talking to friends about music, attending gigs or playing instruments. A person that is individual, have they own style and make their own choices.
Representation- In this photograph the artist is representing rock music too be very edgey. Makes rock artists come across as very fearless and in your face, with him being so close to the camera. He is representig himself to be very individual to others and stand out from other genres of music and fans.
Language- The font on this Q magazine is Sans Serif, it is clear and easy to read for the audience. All the font is the same but ranges in thickness. Their have done this to make some of the text stand out more against the others. The subtitle headings are in a bolder black to the text to make it stand out more and let the audience know that it has more importance and meaning. The use of colour on the cover is very simple, with the use of black, white and grey. It may be very simple but is very effective. With the white and grey being used for the less important features on the magazine, this helps the black coloured features more noticeable to the audience. Therefore more chance of people buying the magazine. Q magazine have been clever with their use of colour because they have kept it simple with the basic colours, then have used a bright, bold red to highlight the logo and masthead of the magazine. This will help Q stand out against other magazines, therefore having a better chance of being bought. Having the exception of some colour being splashed in the cover on some smaller features gives the magazine an edge. The photo is a long shot of a music artist 'Lily Allen'. In the photo she is topless giving the impression that she is confident with the body and who she is. Her being topless has also being done to attract the male audience, gets the audience thinking what else will be included inside that is similiar to the front cover? Her expressions are quite sexual, trying to intice the audience, as she biting the finger, looking over her shoulder at the audience, engaging with them. Her hair colour and leggings match the colour scheme, with her hair been black and her leggings been a mix of black, white and grey. Good thought into what she is wearing to match everything else on the cover. She represents a careless pop artist that is living her life to the full and doesn't really care what others think. Also in the photo there is two black dogs that look very intimidating and scary, look as if they are protecting Lily. So maybe this gives the impression that women need protecting? There isn't an awful lot of text, which i feel is effective for this magazine, not too much going on, which is appealing to the audience. But enough information to get the audience excited about whats included inside... Subtitles - being well known artists that the audience would recognize immediately if looking at the magazine, therefore creates interest instantly. If the audience is a movie fan then the magazine includes a splash telling the audience that inside the magazine their is an article on the rgeatest rock movies. This is another incentive to buy the magazine. The splash comes across as an statement. Lily Allen isn't typically a rock artist, this is a bit controversial?
Idealogy- The UK's biggest selling monthly music magazine. The magazine sits at the heart of a cross-platform brand that discovers great music of substance for its consumers.Over the years Q magazine has gotten themselves a reputation of been trusted and a premium quality voice of music authority amongst fans, musicians and the music industry alike- Has world beating exclusives and and outstanding production values. Their have not only got their reputation through the magazine but radio, online, TV adn unique Q events.
Institution- Q magazine is produced by Bauer media and is based in Hamburg, Germany, and also has an address in London. It is distributed all over the world, but mainly United Kingdom, USA, Australia. Bauer media are well known world wide for there excellent distribution of their magazines and have a world wide circulation of magazines titles amount to 38 million magazines a week.
Audience- Q's main target audience is people that are engaged and open minded music fans driven to continually discover new music and then to use their discovery to influence their friends. Their audience is split into 75% male and 25% female and is affluent with 68% ABC1. With the audience being 75% males, the cover appeals more to males, therefore them using a female that is topless, this will catch the males attention immediately.
Representation- Lily Allen on this front cover is represented to be a sexy young woman, that can dominate males. You could also say this because of her having the dogs right by her side supporting her. She is stronger than men, this would be intimidating but also attractive to the male audience. Represents rocks music as a genre to be very crazy and individual. Appeals to someone that likes to let go of themselves and have fun.

College Magazine Evaluation

I was given the task to create a Wyke College magazine front cover. I decided firstly I should take some photos for the main image on the cover, I took some images of different students around the college. Before choosing the photo for my final cover, I jotted some ideas of what I wanted it to look like, to have a rough idea of what I was going to be doing. After taking a variation of photos I decided that my best and most effective image was one of student sat in the college library at a desk with books in front of him. I had the student smiling in the photo, as this gives the audience a feel that the college is a happy and fun place to be. The front cover is very bright and vibrant; this also gives off a positive and happy vibe to represent the college and the students. My text is all black and quite bold, this is because I played around with other colours and no other colours really stood out against the background colours as well as black did. I also think black is the most effective because the background is quite bright and vibrant, so the text being black really stands out and gets to the point of what it’s trying to tell its audience.
The front cover is designed to appeal to young students that are at the stage of deciding what type of education to go into next. The cover is trying to give off the best impression it can of the college to the audience. It does this by a happy student presenting the college, showing that the students are enjoying being at the college. As well as having fun, the books that are in the photo show that students are getting good grades.
In my front cover I have included a mast head saying ‘Wyke College…6th form’, I wanted the mast head to be simple, so the audience knew exactly what the magazine was about and so then the college name would become more well known. Rather than say ‘college life’ which was another masthead idea I was considering, as the audience wouldn’t know instantly what college the magazine was about and may not take the time to read and find out. Therefore I thought having the name of college in the masthead was a good idea for catching the audience’s attention. I included a sell line above the mast head, I decided that my sell line was going to be a promotion about NUS’s that students are able to get from college. I did this because it entices the audiences, its grabs their attention and makes them want one. I did the sell line in a different colour to all the other text because I wanted it to stand out and for the audience to read it more or less immediately, because promotions are good for giving the college a good reputation. I fitted all the text around my medium close up of a student because I didn’t want any of the text to cut it out, as it’s the main features and represents a lot of what the college is about and what life is like within the college. Down the right hand side of the front cover I have included some subtitles, articles that would be included within the magazine. I did this because it makes the audience excited about what goes on at Wyke College, and makes them want to read inside.
I attracted my audience by using a person with a friendly face and someone that I thought interacted with audience well. Someone that gave off a good vibe, because the audience are not going to want to read the magazine or be interested in the college at all if the student doesn’t look like he’s interested or enjoying his college experience. I put a date on the front cover so the audience knows that the information in the magazine is new and updated information, the audience will then know that Wyke College are frequently making new magazines with brand new exciting information. When editing the image that I had chosen I started with editing with the brightness and contrast, I did this because the picture was quite dull so brightening it up gave it a more exciting look and feel about the college. I also played around with the vibrance and levels to make the appearance of the bright colours like the red and yellow really stand out against all the other colours. All of these things gives off a exciting and interesting vibe of the college. The front cover is designed to make students want to go to Wyke College and find out more about what it’s like and what type of things go on there.
